About CLBC

Community Living BC (CLBC) delivers support and services to people with developmental disabilities, children with special needs and their families in British Columbia.
 
It has a board of self-advocates, family and community members, as well as staff located throughout the province. We believe that people with developmental disabilities and their families know best when it comes to their needs, goals and planning for the future.

Social Skills for Special Needs

Activity Club - Group for Younger Children with Special Needs  
  • Purpose: Youth Workers provide activity-based learning opportunities to help develop age-appropriate social, motor and life skills.
  • Who is it for: children aged 5 – 8, and 9 -11.
  • When: Once a week.
  • Where: SHARE's Family Resource Centre at Mountain View Elementary.
  • Registration:  Referrals to the Individual and Group Service must be made by CLBC at 604.933.2000.

Supper Club – Groups for Children and Youth with Special Needs

Supper Clubs focus on supporting children/youth to acquire meal planning and meal preparation skills while encouraging social interaction through the practice of dining together and group activities.  There are groups for 8-12 year olds and for 13-18 year olds.
  •  Purpose: children with special needs developing life and social skills by helping prepare dinner with youth workers and their peers. There is also time for other creative and recreational activities, as well as occasional community outings.
  • Who is it for: children and youth 8 -18 years old. 
  • When: One evening every two weeks. 4 Hours per session.
  • Where: 2 locations: SHARE's King Edward St. site, #200-25 King Edward St., Coquitlam and SHARE's Clarke St. site, 2615 Clarke St., Port Moody. Location does not change for a specific group.
  • Registration: Referrals to the Individual and Group Service must be made by CLBC at 604.933.2000
Youth Skills and Training Group
 
This is a social group for youth aged 13 – 18 years old.  The focus is on learning about skills building resources and volunteer training in the surrounding community. The group makes appearances at various community events to take on supervised leadership and peer modelling roles. 
  • Purpose: Youth Workers support youth to explore skills and education opportunities in preparation for job or volunteer possibilities in the future.
  • Who is it for: open to youth 13 -18 years old with, but not limited to, Asperger's Syndrome, high functioning Autism and a diagnosed mild developmental disability. A moderate knowledge of community safety is also an expectation for participants of this group.
  • When: One evening per week. 2 hours per session.
  • Where: SHARE's King Edward St. site, #200-25 King Edward St., Coquitlam.
  • Registration: Referrals to the Individual and Group Service must be made by CLBC at 604.933.2000.
  • Groups for Families and Children
Boy's Group
 
Boys Group is a social group for male youth aged 13 – 18 years old.  The focus is on preparing for adulthood, increasing independence and social skills between peers and in the community. The group meets once a week on Tuesday evenings. 
  • Purpose: Youth Workers support youth to achieve their life and social skills in anticipation for adulthood.
  • Who is it for: open to males 15-18 years old with, but not limited to, Asperger's Syndrome, high functioning Autism and a diagnosed mild developmental disability.
  • When: One evening per week. 2 hours per session.
  • Where: SHARE's King Edward St. site, #200-25 King Edward St., Coquitlam.
  • Registration: Referrals to the Individual and Group Service must be made by CLBC at 604.933.2000.
  • Groups for Families and Children 
Girls Group
 
Girls Group is a social group for female youth ages 13 – 18 years old. The focus is on preparing for adulthood, increasing independence and social skills between peers and in the community. The group meets once a week.
