Clowning Around with Sounds:
A Phonological Awareness Inservice
Did you know that…
“Those children in the bottom 20% of phonological awareness at the beginning of the first grade end up 2.5 grade levels or more behind their peers in reading by the end of fifth grade.” (Tallal, 1999)
This workshop is for childcare providers and preschool teachers who work with children aged 3 to 5 years of age. It addresses learning more about the importance of phonological awareness: what it is and how it is different from phonics. It helps in finding resources and materials to foster development of phonological awareness and in learning how to incorporate phonological awareness into preschool activities.

The Partnership Connection:
A Parent Information Session
This session was designed for parents of children on the SHARE waitlist for speech-language services. This session will give parents general information about what to expect during the speech and language therapy process, tips to help their child communicate better, a chance to meet with other parents of children who may have communication needs and an opportunity to talk with a Speech-Language Pathologist before speech-language therapy starts for their child. Parents told us that they found this session helpful as it gives them strategies to use while waiting for their first speech and language session. The information will be for adults so we ask that children attend the first therapy session instead of the Parent Information Session.
If you are interested in the Parent Information Session, please contact Sandra Bedrich at 604.529.5106 to register for the session.
Building a Home With More Than One Language
A workshop for parents of children who are growing up exposed to more than one language. Information is provided regarding the typical stages of language development for a child who is learning two or more different languages. An emphasis is put on the importance of strengthening the child’s first language in preparation for their learning of another language. Strategies for helping the multilingual child through the stages of language development are discussed and signs of atypical language learning are shared.
