After School Program

What is this program about?  The After School Program grew out of discussions with families living in the Burquitlam neighbourhood. It offers a variety of activities for children from ages 6-12 years, and their families. Activities for children include arts and crafts, music, sports and recreation, with an emphasis on having fun, making friends, and developing new skills.

Each day of the program, an activity is available for younger students (Kindergarten to grade 3) and another for older students (grades 3-5).

Do I have to register?  Yes you must register.  The program is free: programs are advertised through their local school, and students must register for the programs. For more information about the After School Program, please contact our After School Program Coordinator, Noelle Retson, at 604.936.3900 (local 194).

Schools and Families Together

  • Schools and Families Together is a partnership involving families living in Coquitlam’s Burquitlam neighbourhood, three elementary schools (Roy Stibbs, Mountain View, and Miller Park), Banting Middle School, SHARE Family & Community Services, Immigrant Services Society, Coquitlam Leisure and Parks Services, Coquitlam Public Library, Ministry of Children & Family Development (MCFD) School-Based Social Worker, and Simon Fraser University’s “Friends of Simon Tutoring Program”.
  • We have worked together to develop and support the After School Program.
  • In addition, we organize a variety of community meetings and cultural celebrations during the year which attract school-age children and their families.
  • There is a Parents’ Steering Committee, and a Youth Committee, which welcomes the involvement of Burquitlam parents and youth (aged 13-18 years).
  • The After School Program also provides opportunities for parents to participate. Activities for parents include: parenting workshops, employment programs, English Practice Groups and other activities of interest to parents.
